The original “Final Fantasy XII” was released back in 2006, which sold over 5.6 million units and garnered high praise for the revolutionary gameplay mechanics, music and graphics. “Square Enix” then followed that up with “Final Fantasy XII: Zodiac Job System,” which featured more polished gameplay via specific character classes. Recently, the Japanese video game company announced that an HD version of the game titled “Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age” will come to the PS4.
The Verge notes that the game company seems particularly excited about this development since they simply could not wait until E3 to make their announcement. It’s only a few days away, so the difference wouldn’t have been that significant.
The site also highlights the past exclusivity of International Editions of the game, which were only released in Japan. “The Zodiac Age” will finally provide U.S. players the chance to experience the beautiful game with several new features that they missed out on.
“Final Fantasy XII” offered a different playstyle compared to previous single-player titles in the franchise, emulating combat reminiscent of massive multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG). As the BBC mentions, the clearest example of this is the Gambit system, which allowed players to automate the actions of their characters depending on their roles. Everything from attacking, using spells, and healing other characters could be set in such a way that players could fight bosses without lifting a finger.
In comparison, previous games in the series offered turn-based fighting where game characters and enemies took turns attacking. This change was welcomed by many, but some expressed reservations.
Even with the shock that the changes inflicted on long-time fans, though, the title still sold phenomenally well for its time. With the re-mastered version announced, Square Enix hopes to ignite nostalgia among fans who want to revisit the world of Ivalice and go adventuring with Vaan and companions; this time with improved graphics, gameplay, and better character customization.
